House Leadership Outlines Summer Agenda

Posted on 5/25/2012

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) sent a memo to House Republican Conference Members this morning to outline the chamber's "summer legislative agenda," making clear the House will consider extensions of the 2001/2003 tax cuts before the August recess.

"Knowing that comprehensive reform will take time, we must ensure that while Congress is working to bring about competitive change, government does not increase the cost of business," the memo says. "Therefore, before we leave for August, I expect to schedule a vote on legislation preventing the largest tax increase in history. The Senate should join us in providing this very basic level of certainty prior to November."

The agenda includes consideration "as early as June 4" of legislation (H.R. 5842) that would remove the ban on using health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts for purchasing over-the-counter medications.

The memo also notes that leadership "will be working" to bring postal reform legislation (H.R. 2309) to the floor and that the House will consider a Federal Reserve audit bill (H.R. 459) by Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) in July.
