ABA Offers Guide for Buying Farmland

Posted on 5/24/2013

Because crop and livestock price increases are spurring farmers to consider expansion, ABA on Tuesday offered 15 considerations for farmers seeking to buy more land.

Developed by ABA's Agricultural and Rural Bankers Committee, the considerations include business conditions, cash flow, revenue forecasts, renting versus owning, cash versus financing, appraisals, soil quality, water rights, mineral rights, zoning, environmental issues, and more.

"Farmers should consult their banker throughout the land buying process, to ensure decisions made today best position them to prosper and obtain credit in the future," said ABA Senior Vice President John Blanchfield. "When it comes to buying land, you cannot spend too much time researching all of the contingencies."
