Postal Service To Sell Gift Cards In Market Test

Posted on 5/4/2011

The Postal Regulatory Commission has issued an order authorizing the U.S. Postal Service to sell gift cards as part of a market test beginning May 1. The USPS requested the authority, arguing that gift cards are a postal service because they are cash equivalents, like money orders, and are likely to be sent through the mail. The ruling is limited to a two-year market test and requires the USPS to show, among other things, total and net revenues, and an estimate of the percentage of gift cards mailed.
